Tax Day Protest April 17th

Matthew Barnes - Vice Chair of the Libertarian Party of San Bernardino County

Redlands Post Office is the only post office open for the entire county. People are going to have to drive long distances to get to it and that will help amplify our message. We will meet at the post office as we can finish our daily occupations, preoccupations and responsibilities.

Getting to the post office early means a better chance at getting on the news so if you can be out there at 2 or 3pm: Get on out there and get seen!

    The rules:
  • Each demonstrator is there as an expression of their individual will. Bring your own signs and costumes. If you are short on idea's , dress up like a hobo and plea for help as you just paid your taxes. A cardboard sign and old clothes are easy to come by. A small army of beggers, poor from taxes, would be great theater and an impactful presentation.
  • Be respectful of private property. You may not trespass on peoples property.
  • Remain on a public thuroughfare (the sidewalk). And you must be constantly moving.
  • Police may want to talk to you about your part in the demonstration. Cops are terrific people for the most part and deserve your respect. They hate paying taxes too, so if you are approached be super friendly and cooperative you might recruit a libertarian. You have a right to be there; but you will need to explain this without confrontation to be effective.
  • NO STICKS. Signs should be attached to handles that could not possibly be construed as a weapon. Cardboard tubes are great. Small diameter PVC pipes work also. Signs mounted with grasps on the back are safe as are sandwich boards.
  • Under no circumstanecs should anyone block traffic on the street or sidewalk. Our aim is to not obstruct anyone. Not only is it rude and illegal, we want people to be amused and interested not angry and ambivolent.
  • We will have collateral information on the evils of taxes on http://www.yuktax.com/ and http://www.sbclp.org/tax. There will be a link on the front page too. It will talk about taxes, some practical solutions, and an invitation to join us at our meetings and in our forums. This cross promotion is, of course, only a suggestion. Use your imagination and come on down to have fun.
